Shivers & Raspberry Morphine Cheesecake

The weekend was okay, eating wise. I did have some chips yesterday, but Husband and I split the bag. They were actually quite good . . . buffalo and ranch Doritos. Interesting combination!

The best part of the weekend was the whole wheat asparagus and broccoli quiche I made yesterday. I used CFO eggs - but only 4, OG asp and brocc, WW crust with fresh dill, water and not cream, plus non-dairy cheese. It was delicious! As we speak, the last of it is still in my mouth (we had it for breakfast today, too). It was so good it was hard to believe it wasn't bad for us!

Saturday was a bowl of baked onion soup - a vegetarian version of the French onion soup. Plus a nice, big fresh salad. Good times.

But perhaps the best part of the weekend had nothing to do with food. A former student, now friend, had invited us to take part in a very special walk. As you may or may not know, Cincinnati was a HUGE part of the Underground Railroad. It was literally JUST on the other side of the river from a slave state. So, Cherie invited us for a re-enactment walk, 1.5 miles through hill and dale in the same route many slaves took to the next stop. The problem was, yesterday dawned and Husband and I were both sick. I had been sick all week, he got sick Friday night. He was so ill he took medication!

So, Cherie went to see her ailing father who is terminally ill but at home. Since we still wanted to see each other, she invited Husband and I over to see her house, and we would all go to dinner.

Her house is amazing. Well, it was amazing and will be again. You see, her house was built in 1820 and to the untrained eye, it is falling apart. In actuality, the structure is still sound . . .there is just a lot of work to do. And Cherie and her husband, Michael, have taken it upon themselves to make sure this "grand dame" is soon in her rightful glory. Her ceilings are 12 feet tall, her hardwood is still intact. The part that gave me shivers, and one of the main reasons she wanted to restore the house: in the basement, built out from the foundation into the yard, is a small room. It's not accessible from the main part of the basement. Two pieces of stone are missing and you can see the darkness beyond. And, it was in the darkness beyond that the original family would hide slaves seeking freedom. You see, this house was a stop on the Underground Railroad.

That was very humbling. It gives me chills just thinking of it now. The way in to the space is sealed now - covered by the area where her refrigerator rests. But it's still there.

After nearly being in tears from the overwhelming sensation of just seeing those two holes in the wall, I was happy to head out to dinner! We went to a lovely little family place down the street. It was there that Cherie told us, trying to make light of a very difficult situation, that her father cannot swallow pills any longer, so they brought him liquid morphine - and it's flavored with raspberry! So, needless to say, it was hilarious when the waiter asked us if we would like some dessert, perhaps raspberry cheesecake? After putting it together with the morphine flavor, I will never look at cheesecake the same way again!
